The top five (non-technical and non-Mastodon-specific) English language terms I never knew were so popular until I arrived in the Mastodon system:
(5) "THE GUARDIAN" and news ascribed to it,
(4) "chuffed,"
(3) "whilst,"
(2) "Glastonbury Tor," and
(1) "#TOTP."
Even now, I still don't know what that hashtag refers to. The contexts, in which people use it, seem inscrutable to me. It's some recurring event, I think—?
Moreover, I've had days when I got the impression that half of our English-speaking community lives within walking distance of Glastonbury Tor.

@setsly@mindly.social the hashtag #TOTP refers to Top Of The Pops, a British record chart television programme, made by the BBC and broadcast weekly between 1 January 1964 and 30 July 2006. This gets rebroadcast on (most) Friday evenings when all the cool kids come together on Mastodon to enjoy, reminisce, and snark along to the episodes. The hashtag is also used by some computery type people to refer to Time Based One Time Passwords but they are obviously, um, misguided 🙂
