Welcome to Lemmy, thanks for the post detailing your experience and glad to hear you’re getting your family onboard too! I think you’ll feel right at home with the Linux nerds and tech privacy wonks here. I wanted to consume the content instead of just being fed it. Like you, this is the basis of a lot of my motivation to try and then stick with these FOSS programs, but perhaps differently than you, it also guides the extent to which I feel comfortable continuing to use some proprietary software and algorithms. I’ve committed to interacting with technology on my terms, even if I have reduced but not fully cut myself off from big tech.
