Open a photo from the file manager to see which app opens. It should be the same.
Once you've identified the app, you can remove as default for images, and then you should be prompted for an app next time you open an image.

@seindal@mastodon.uno thanks for the tip, but it looks like the images open up directly in file manager. I'm not sure if I can make that "not default"...?
