@jon@social.vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net I’ve been writing about web browsers on old and limited devices, and Opera pops up everywhere. Presto was such a force in the browser space. Such a testament to how solid of a browser engine Presto was for it to run so superbly over such a wide range of limited devices.

@vale@fedi.vale.rocks @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net Yes, I am very proud of what we achieved. We took on the task to generate a codebase that could run everywhere. We were at the time able to make Opera run on a new platform, OS/HW, in 2 weeks for a prototype and maybe 6 months for a shipped product. IMHO we had the best codebase by a mile, when you look at capability, speed, standards support and HW and software requirement. We would be able to run on platforms without good memory management and graphics management. We just used our own instead when the OS was lacking and went straight onto the metal. This included actually being memory safe, which I do not think any of the other browsers were. It was a lot of fun to take on those challenges. We are trying to do the same thing at Vivaldi. We are using Chromium, but we still take on the task to make Vivaldi run well on things like the Raspberry Pi and also in cars. Some of these issues are about the platform, while some are more about usability. Both problems are interesting. Similarly it is good to try to adapt to the needs of every user. It is a challenge, but a fun one.
