I am once again reminded of Chesterton's Fence.
Those who knew why things were done the way they were have all left, and their work is being systematically destroyed by... (forgive me for being less than charitable)... novelty hacks.
Thousands of hours of painstaking research into HMI are being replaced with, "Ugh, that was old, this is prettier."
