@dilmandila@mograph.social thank you for pointing that out. I didn't know the term; it's a great word to describe the risk of harm that is obviously there. I will call it out when I see friends do it from now. I've worked directly with @pacific06@mastodon.social and friends for years now. So @PeachMcD@union.place, the grift hypothesis seems implausible to me. But like you said, I'm not there and don't know a lot about these things. Other than that, we're all human, so I don't expect any saintly behavior from anyone. But we can try our best to treat each other with honest respect and improve every day. Be safe and happy y'all!

    @iwein@mas.to @pacific06@mastodon.social @PeachMcD@union.place It's a not a common term these days as the main culprits, that is big corporate NGOs like Care and Oxfam switched tactics and use largely "positive" images in their campaigns, but the trick is now being used by scam artists online, as seen in a recent BBC documentary that highlights a case in Uganda where dogs were being abused so that scammers could generate content...
