Land and #environmental defenders—#Indigenous leaders, farmers, conservationists, and community #activists—risk their lives opposing the destructive exploitation of natural resources. The dangers facing defenders are widespread and persistent. Since reporting began in 2012, Global Witness estimates that at least 2,253 defenders have been killed or disappeared. #LatinAmerica remains the deadliest region, accounting for roughly 82 percent of killings in 2024: #Colombia reported 48 deaths, #Guatemala 20, #Mexico 18, and #Brazil 12. The #violence is linked to land disputes, #mining, agribusiness, and organized #crime. Indigenous peoples are disproportionately affected. Although they make up only six percent of the global population, they account for roughly one-third of defenders killed or targeted worldwide. A majority of killings and disappearances in 2024 were linked to extractive activities, with mining and logging at the forefront. “These defenders are ultimately safeguarding all ways of life on this planet, and we must protect them from enforced disappearance.” “If we still have rainforests, it’s because we, the indigenous, have fought for our lives to protect them”. https://www.counterpunch.org/2025/12/09/indigenous-and-environmental-defenders-risk-their-lives-as-the-last-line-protecting-the-planet/ #Climate #ClimateCrisis #press #journalism #honduras #Ecuador #capitalism #ClassWar

At least 358 human rights defenders were killed last year, according to a report released last week by Front Line Defenders, a Dublin-based group that provides support for global human rights activists. Nearly a quarter, 84, were targeted because of their often unpaid work protecting land and the environment. Those killings were documented in #Brazil, #Colombia, #Ecuador, #France, #Honduras, #Guatemala, #Mexico, #India, #Indonesia, #Peru, #Philippines, #Turkey, #Somalia and #Palestine. Indigenous-rights defenders—often working on environmental issues but tracked separately from environmental defenders—accounted for another 17 percent of the killings documented by the group. There were nearly 4,000 non-lethal attacks on #humanrights defenders across 119 countries last year, a figure that includes multiple violations against the same individual in some cases, according to the report. https://insideclimatenews.org/news/22062026/environmental-defenders-are-increasingly-targeted/ Because it's not mentioned in the article: these attacks are part of the #classwar declared by the bourgeoisie against the social majority.
