@john_rando@poa.st like the IDE and stuff? my general approach is to use the vendor IDE (MPLAB X in this case) to set up the project so the basic configuration is done, then use sublime text to write the program code and flash with whatever command line tool is available
honestly I recommend switching to ESP32 (or STM32) instead of spending time on AVR though

@deprecated_ii@poa.st I'll look into the STM32 since that seems to be popular for 3d printing hardware. I already had AVR stuff in hand though so I figured I'd start there.
