Let's not lose sight of this: Starmer failed in the way that all centre-left governments are doomed to fail, because there are no non-radical solutions to the polycrisis. The centre-left dream of positive change without disruption is over. In France, the electorate gifted Macron with a golden opportunity to bring together the political centre and not just the centre-left, but a broad left coalition. He fluffed it. Let's just hope Burnham can bring it off, because it's the only way forward for democracy now.
