@todd@social.lol I’m still looking into it, though I’m not entirely sure that it’s going to be an ideal feature for everyone. It’s less of a “newsletters” feature than it is a direct pipeline of posts to email, and there’s no way to manage that flow with any specific preferences (i.e. there’s no per-post email toggle; if you make a post, your email subscribers will receive an email 100% of the time). I think the Mastodon team mentioned that this feature is intended more for institutional users, government agencies, etc. that typically post less frequent announcements and want to make it easy for people to receive those in their inboxes. But for folks like you and me, who might post multiple times a day (or sometimes multiple times in an hour!), it’s hard to imagine someone wanting to receive an email on every single one of those posts. So, I think I’ve gotta put some more thought into how we’d roll this out and the criteria for using it. I definitely don’t want to run something that could pester the heck out of people via email, and the feature as it exists today could absolutely do that with scary ease. The recent tech news articles describing the feature as “newsletters” have done a bit of a disservice, I think (even Mastodon simply calls it “email subscriptions”), and they kinda set a specific expectation that the software doesn’t really live up to in my opinion.
