Cops are cowards, so they might not have felt empowered enough to gang up on him. A visible, if not brandished, firearm would have heightened the situation for sure, and made it so there was a 50/50 chance that “they fucked off” or “they shot him.” But, even though it’s with hindsight, seeing as they still killed him…
