“mote” as in a speck of dust “beam” as in a huge plank of wood Basically don’t point out small faults of your neighbor while ignoring huge faults of your own. It’s a metaphor. No one has a beam in their eye. But it’s a metaphor that drops suddenly in the second half, because you can literally imagine a mote in someone’s eye.
