1998 Rita Hester is killed in her apartment. There's no news coverage, but the anniversary of her death became the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

I just put all the dates into a spreadsheet and sorted and the frequency gap isn't 30 years, or even 20 years... or 10 years... or 5. It's one or two. Since 1929, there was a transgender story in the news basically every year or two. Things get a little thin in the 80s and 90s, and the World Wars produce two big blank spots, but that's it. Before 1929, things get patchy (1-20 years between stories), but that's just as likely my inability to find sources as it is actually patchy coverage.
