I agree with you that we feel stories as real, and that they can be spaces for optimism and hope. I don’t feel works that are overly pessimistic are helpful. I suppose my point is that neither utopia or dystopia really exist, I think it’s often a matter of perspective. I can watch the news and feel utterly defeated, but then on an early walk to work I can pause to witness a fat bright moon hanging low in a pink rising dawn sky and realise that this time is just a drop of rain in the ocean of the universe; my perspective shifts and I think that this world is filled with wonder, and I also experience a huge amount of love as a physical rushing through the body.
I get what you’re saying about the creation of tension – but that is an essential part of storytelling, and life. Without tension and movement we get inertia and homogeneity, and I know that I’ve done my most painful, but ultimately most rewarding growing, during times of tension. Which brings me full-circle to the idealisation of a future without difficulties…
