This comes as no surprise. Last summer a friend who works for a national supermarket was being pressured to change contracts. The new contract would be for 16 hours a week with additional hours at the discretion of management.
Apparently 16 hours would be below the threshold for NI to be paid. It would also mean a halfing of income and the need to pay voluntary contributions to protect pension rights.
