the apocalypse being totally fine is certainly a choice. nobody seemed to really care that everyone else was dead, after the rain all the problems were solved. the monsters never even really attacked them, the only one that was prowling around was just joanna's fiancee. really the only problem in the whole movie was mickey.

there is a tragic subplot of the rancher guy that finally got everything he wanted in the love of the beautiful woman, but his crippling alcoholism sent him back into the fog. completely un-commented on in the text of the movie though, the movie would have otherwise been exactly the same if he was not in it. #monsterdon
