I spent a non-negligible amount of time this week working on a contribution for an open source project. Wrote a very detailed PR message explaining the contribution, as well as the shortcomings and how we could work to fix them. Was feeling great... until I got a short rude reply. If you see someone put a lot of effort into something, why would your first reaction be trying to shut them down instead of engaging positively and with curiosity and trying to help them succeed? I was interested in spending more time contributing to the project, but that was a big turn off.
