@emd@cosocial.ca looks like you got a lot of great suggestions already. I didn't see any yet that mentioned assessing the amount of sunlight your site receives. You can get further faster by matching the plants to the available sunlight. For example, Sword Fern, Pacific Bleeding Heart and rhododendron do well in shaded locations, while Lupine and Goldenrod flourish in sunny spots.
