@chrisabides@infosec.exchange trying to use the new site everyday, but i'm concerned about whether mastodon is a site that can be used for the growth of my illustration business. What do you think? From what I can gather it leans harder towards "networking" over "recommendation"

@veno@socel.net I think the jury's out; a platform's value to an artist is going to be largely tied to how many people use the platform, and how good the platform is or isn't at spreading brand awareness. I would guess Mastodon is "neutral" when it comes to brand awareness stuff; there's no algorithm here, so you'll be fully reliant on boosts/re-tweets to reach new people. How many people will actually settle here...who knows. One of the big tech companies could spin up Twitter 2.0 tomorrow and this place would probably become a ghost town overnight. I think it's worth the effort, but I don't think Mastodon is or could ever be the *only* place you try to grow business.
