I was today years old when I learned that the perpetrators of the Jonestown massacre used "Flavor Aid" to poison their followers. It was misidentified as Kool-Aid by police.
Nearly 50 years later we're still using Drinking the Kool-Aid to suggest cult-like behaviour.

@ansuz@gts.cryptography.dog As the cult girl in the chat, I always feel it's worth adding, Jonestown was not unanimously on board with a suicide pact, which is another common misconception. A significant percentage of the victims of the People's Temple Agricultural Project are believed to have been injected with the cyanide against their will. These places can be difficult and dangerous to leave, so even if you have doubts (or would in reaction to suicide orders), it can feel perpetually safer in the short term to play along, until one day you realize it's too late and there's no way out.
