Alternatively, he was extremely lazy but really smart.
Seven of his students and his son received Nobel Prizes. It must be some kind of record. Maybe letting others do the work was teaching method.

I read this anecdote about him a very long time ago. Once he had to miss a lecture, so he wrote an advance notice on the blackboard: Professor Thomson will not meet his classes today. When he returned to the same room before the next lecture, he found that someone had erased the letter C.
