False. Cars used to be death traps until the government started enforcing safety standards. The Chevy Corvair used to have a four-wheel steering system that would destabilize the car during long, sweeping corners. Steering columns used to spear you through the chest. Lap belts would snap peoples spines. The Ford Pinto would spill fuel and ignite when rear-ended.
Cars used to be so much more dangerous. We owe a lot to Volvo and Ralph Nader.
