Tip Toe is one of the most monumentally ignorant pieces of television ever committed to the medium. Amidst a backdrop of real world violence against ultra-marginalised queer and non-white people, a white middle aged man fantasises about the lynching of a white middle aged man. It’s bigotry porn, and that’s probably profound to some people, but it’s cold comfort to the people getting fucked every single day.
It’s telling that even amidst this “what if they turn on one of us next” fantasy, the consequences loom large compared to the real world consequences of real world killers. Two of Leo’s killers receive life sentences. A dozen accomplices receive prison sentences. In the real world, this doesn’t happen, but this isn’t the real world.
Back in the day, people writing TV shows used to do this thing called “research”. Even a cursory look at how mob violence and queerphobic violence is treated in the British judicial system could have prevented this whole embarrassing affair.
When they do start killing white gay men in the streets, nobody will receive hefty prison sentences. Baying mobs will celebrate, Members of Parliament will celebrate, Fleet Street will celebrate. The oh so righteous people behind this programme are not ready. At this point, it’s clear that nothing could ever prepare them.
