To me it was something about the setting, I was like 13 at the time and compared to Quake that was an excellent multiplayer game, the vibe and story really attracted me at the time. The main difference to halo is that the master chief feels like an unstoppable war machine but marathon made me feel scared, running around in vents and panicking at the sight of a bug.
