turns out i can't load an OS onto the Xiaomi Poco F1 i bought without like, calling up the manufacturer & pleading with them to give me the bootloader unlock code. so, considering a different phone ... 😓

Whilst it is easy to unlock, the FP5 still requires an online service to be up, it's friendly though. I prefer the Shiftphone 8 because it doesn't, and is otherwise a very similar device. Better in some ways, but it doesn't have a @z3ntu@fosstodon.org working super hard to mainline everything, so you win some you lose some. Both work really well, and will probably be fully mainline supported devices soon. All that is waiting is camera on shift8 and audio on both.
