It was inherited from Dutch a long time ago, but has fallen out of favor in modern times, with "alpine" replacing it. It is only used as an adjective though, usually referring to animals or features of the Alpine mountain range. It is perfectly correct to say "the alpen snow" instead of "the alpine snow", just a bit old-fashioned.
