@unmind@social.xenofem.me lowkirk one of the best horror movies of the 21st century. it's like the pure distilled essence of the emotion of fear.

  • @nyx@social.xenofem.me @unmind@social.xenofem.me Skinamarink does best something i have felt conspicuously lacking from art in general which is to replicate not only the content but the peculiar form of childhood horror; at least to me Skinamarink feels less like a film than it does a consolidated half-repressed memory which makes it violating in a way that most horror films can only aspire to. And not only allegorical, it's uncomfortably close to experiences of mine as a child. Something i heard a lot growing up, or at least enough to remember, from especially insufferable adults is that kids below a certain age going through something traumatic are supposed to be spared something by "not knowing better," which always infuriated me, because "not knowing better" does nothing to dispel terror, it just transmutes it into something else that's harder to name - which is the thing that Skinamarink is - this arbitrary labyrinthine malaise, helplessness in the face of contrived loss, having the capacity for tantrum reduced to ennui, being robbed of expressing it because you don't have words stronger than "sad" or "bored" - if there are words strong enough

@nyx@social.xenofem.me @unmind@social.xenofem.me watching backrooms really puts into perspective just how good skinamarink is both as purely horror and as an anti nostalgia cynic piece . people really just hate low concept stuff i think
