@micr0@fuzzies.wtf @esm@wetdry.world the code author always owns their own copyright unless they explicitly sign a contract to transfer ownership. a license is a different type of contract that does not affect copyright status but instead indemnifies against litigation on the basis of copyright infringement granted the provisions are met by the party seeking to incorporate the copyrighted work. failing to uphold license provisions may not always enable an infringement lawsuit by the copyright owner if the defendant can argue fair use, preservation, or another of the uses protected by copyright law and/or legal precedent from court decisions
