@gnoll110@ruby.social @startrek@fedigroups.social I was wondering why this sounded so familiar and realized the same thing happened in Star Trek Deep Space 9. There's a time travel episode where some aliens end up on Earth (at Area 51 of course) during the red scare and get accused of being communist spies. They ask one of them if he's a Commie and if he's read Marx and his response is something like "I'll have to look him up when I get back" 7 episodes later he's leading a strike and quoting the communist manifesto.

@gbargoud@masto.nyc @gnoll110@ruby.social @startrek@fedigroups.social Ah yes, "he wasn't a hero -- he was an union man!" Great episode, and I specially appreciated how Rom reading Marx didn't turn him into a walking stereotype (eg. someone who repeats phrases but doesn't fully understand what they mean), but instead help him connect to the people around him, and find answers to questions that had plagued him (and by extension: his culture) since forever.
