I am unemployed for a couple of weeks now, and because the economy is what it is, It is possible that I might get the "can you explain the gap in your CV" question. I dread that question. Therefore, I came up with the Start-Up Role Play (SURP) strategy. The concept of SURP is simple: work on a fun project and make it look like it is the product of a start-up. This works best with tech, such as apps or software. In my case it is robotics. Yes, this is reinventing the portfolio.
