@stim3on@fosstodon.org Do you know of any scientific attempts at 3D modeling a comet trail? This has to be incredibly large, but we usually only see flat images.

@wikkit@mastodon.social Sounds like an interesting challenge, but I'm not aware of any. Currently we probably don't have suitable stereo data to do proper 3D mapping of the tail. However, there are two very interesting papers about 2D spatio-temporal mapping of comet tails, by projecting the image data into the orbital plane of the comet.
