@simontatham@hachyderm.io I've always wondered what would constitute orthonormal features or settings of a tool or language, and would orthonormality be a good or a bad thing? I've just never worked out what unit length would mean for -i.

@tuftyindigo@meow.social true, option settings in software are often more discrete than continuous, so it would stretch the metaphor too far to worry about vector lengths at all! Even in cases where some options _do_ have a continuous setting (like audio volume, or stereo balance) it's not obvious how you compare the values of one option with another :-)
