And yes, I've been Ripley'd more than once in the past 16 years, of which 11 as a package maintainer. My packages are still on CRAN and Bioconductor. Because I asked how to improve and Brian told me.

Last time I asked (very politely) for some help on a (non-trivial) matter, he told me "I'm not going to do your homework, ask your advisor". I found the solution and (most of) my packages are still on the CRAN. All I'm saying is: I'm not surprised that some people are, at some point of their life w not ready to bare with that attitude, and that some are just quitting.
