ok yeah this episode has some interesting implications. Without getting into the episode details: Through the many series we've seen individuals among the federation capable of understanding Klingons, how they value strength, independence, and identity at the cost of everything else. But this episode implies this is not shared amongst the federation; that it, as an organization, struggles to internalise and respect Klingon identity. Which is not surprising given again and again Klingons refuse apparently completely reasonable help. The degree to which their own identity is more important than survival is counter to the federation's core ideals, where survival must always come first. This is what fascinates me, the recurring inability to grasp this. They are more of a foil for each other than I realised huh.
