Have you looked at just having a dhcp hot standby.

It offers better redundancy than just 1 host. Super easy to setup too.

Had I knew that was an option previously, that's probably what I'd have done. However what I have now works quite well and is far simpler. A little traffic might go over wifi whereas with the hot standby it would all go over eth until it failed, but that small amount of wifi traffic doesn't matter and this setup is trivial.
