something of note here is that gygax hated the idea of inhabiting a role whilst playing as he believed it was female-coded (this is real. he said this). in his mode of ttrpg playing all 'alignment' is an arbitrary challenge for the player to fit their strategies into or the dm will punish them (via depriving them of their class powers etc)

  • as the system has developed since, the best fits are one-dimensional stereotypes: chaotic good is when you're robin hood, lawful evil is when you're a nazi (specifically the image the nazis wanted to broadcast of themselves, not how they really were), lawful good is when you're one of the good guys but annoying about it, etc. which are actively counterproductive for trying to either understand the motivations of fictional people or groups (as the alignments will push them toward being hollow bit characters) or play as one (half the alignments are 'asshole alignments' you never want anyone in your group to choose)
