It always seemed intuitively obvious to me that Christ's instruction to "turn the other cheek" and to "pray for your enemies" was simply advice on how to deal with the personal enemies that we all accrue in life. Scaling that up to the macro level and trying to deal that way with group spiritual enemies like Islamists who want to conquer you would obviously be suicide and the eradication of Christianity.
