Since 2024 is officially the first year to have surpassed a 1.5° average temperature, here is a reminder that 1.5 was never a goal based on hard evidence about boundaries of survivable conditions. 1.5° is a political compromise about palatable suffering. Which means that there is ample opportunity and moral imperative for continuing to fight. Every degree of a lessened catastrophe matters, every degree of mitigated impact saves lives. For all sorts of catastrophes.
