Observing the debt ceiling debate, I do think that federal spending has increased bigly in the past few years and it makes sense to rein it in somewhat (or at least hold the line for a while). I'm even willing to concede that the US will have outsized military spending beyond that of any other country; Russia's invasion of Ukraine demonstrates the necessity of that. However...
