in my first year of college, a teacher told us that the best tool for a developer was a pencil. because "good developers code first with pencil and paper, to spot errors before compiling". that sounded crazy. that man lived (and apparently was also trapped) in an era of punching cards, where they needed to drive ~80km to test some code.
