I started Emily Wilson's translation of the Iliad, but had to stop after book 4. This is not Emily's fault; I previously enjoyed her translation of the Odyssey, and the lengthy introduction she wrote for this latest effort. It was the plot. Though I've read other translations, so knew what was coming, somehow right now I couldn't deal with the petulant Greeks and the gods who could do whatever they want. None of them stop Aphrodite? Really?

Instead I plucked Philip Pullman's "The Golden Compass" ("The Northern Lights" is the original UK title) out of my bookshelf. I had to peel off some Post-It notes left by, I think, Z, when she did a book report on it, something like twenty years ago. I clearly hadn't read it since before then. The pages have darkened with age.

  • @plragde I know what you mean—I had to put it aside for a year when I started it, because of then-current news.
