They don't want literate people. The majority of American adults read below a sixth grade level, and about a quarter are functionally illiterate - [source](https://www.thenationalliteracyinstitute.com/2024-2025-literacy-statistics)
(Though my personal favorite statistic from that page is that 2/3 of illiterate Americans were born in the US, who often the same people who complain endlessly about immigrants speaking multiple languages)

Is that stat just English literacy? If someone can read Spanish but not English, are they deemed illiterate?
