@feorag@wandering.shop Apparently it's really difficult to drive fast enough to keep the race cars warm and avoid pissing off the competitors. Even in whatever high-end souped-up road car they're using these days. (The comment above was from many years ago when they were using some kind of AMG Mercedes -- an SL, I think).

@darkling@mstdn.social @feorag@wandering.shop Yeah it's quite difficult. As said, they have to drive those things pretty hard, BUT still at a controlled pace. If they drive too fast, the pack can get too spread out for a good start. If they drive too slowly, nobody gets enough heat in their tires and there's a risk people will spin at the start. They also manage to crash them surprisingly often. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnYf4Midilw

  • @darkling@mstdn.social @feorag@wandering.shop yes, that’s still an issue so the car is going flat out whilst the F1 drivers are moaning on the radio behind about it being slow. These days duties are split between a Merc GT and an Aston-Martin Vantage.
