The beauty and the horror of DNS is that it can still mostly work even with broken configs or dodgy implementations. Sometimes you need a system to fail to spot problems. The controlled interruption phase new TLDs go through when delegated to the internet root is a good example of this thinking. On second thought, it was probably DNS
