I never really felt like the distinction mattered much, at least in this space specifically. The thing is, any software under an open-source license is inherently both kinds of “free” because by design it’s as easy as possible to get your hands on the code and build it yourself. Even if the original author is asking a price for it, there’s nothing stopping someone else from distributing it for free. Most FOSS monetization strategies revolve around selling services adjacent to the free software, like premium support or cloud hosting, or proprietary tools or extensions using nonfree licenses.
