I had heard about the Spanish Wikipedia community split back then, but I had no idea that it was for very good reasons, and that it was a key factor against advertising in Wikipedia. It's not quite true to say that Wikipedia has no advertising: en.Wikipedia *does* currently have (unpaid) advertising (for Google) in a crucially imporant role [1].
