I'm not up on the full story, but it seems from other comments that it's had some lax moderation and that has made federating with other instances contentious at times

@ephesossh@mastodon.online @RainyDaze@mastodon.social @toplesstopics@eldritch.cafe I disagree, it’s big so there’s lots of content. Some of it will offend some people but that doesn’t make it wrong. Unfortunately, there’s a gatekeeping issue with mastodon where some instances defederate at the drop of a hat. (The meme: An admin of your instance once favourited a post I’m uncomfortable with- you should change instance)
