The night before last, at our latitude we achieved what I refer to as the first bending of the solstice "hinge." This is marked by the daily increase in sunlight progressing by less than one minute per day around sunrise, soon to be followed by the same deceleration happening with sunset. Solstice "slow time" is now underway. An alignment I have consistently noticed over the past few years is that our poppies open their first flower no more than a day or two after we enter the hinge, so I'm definitely starting to think of poppies as a ritual flower not for Litha itself but for this transitional period.
