Does Spirited Away count? :P some more obscure picks of mine: Stardust Telepath, Mayonaka Punch, Gunslinger Girl, Do It Yourself!! (assuming a focus on characterization and not just good shows with prominent female characters)

Hmm, it’s difficult. Moribito has good character development for it’s woman lead character. And while GitS is definitely a bit male-oriented as a series, I would say that the character development of Motoko is pretty good in each of the series I’ve seen (The movies, Stand alone complex 1 + 2) but still definitely a bit light on character development. I think it might be a good idea to tell us what series you didn’t like so we know how low the bar is.
