@CoralineAda@ruby.social Sure, back then we had more leverage but I don't think that unionizing when we had that leverage would have changed the situation when said leverage vanished. Automotive workers in my country were unionized since the aftermath of WW2 (previously the fascist regime outlawed unions) but that wasn't enough to save their jobs when building cars abroad became cheaper.
Sure, some software developers were "less smart" (to be kind) than many others and happily built the tools that now are used against many of us but that's just the law of large numbers at work. Among millions you can always find people greedy or stupid enough to build tools that are going to be used to oppress them too.
